Free Tutorial for Boy's Necktie

Tie

This is the pattern I created for my three boys' Easter outfits last year. It is very simple and fast. It usually takes me about 30 minutes to 45 minutes from start to finish. The nice thing about this tie is that it has a narrow neckband that velcroes in the back, under the collar. So, no messing with trying to tie neckties early Easter morning! Enjoy!!

Download the pattern pieces (pdf file) here. **Note: Seam allowances are not included. Cut piece out 1/2 inch larger on all the sides.

Tie

Turn each end of tie inside on fold line, right sides together.

Tie Stitch along outer edge (refer to picture) using 1/4" seam. Turn right side out and press well.
Tie
With right sides together, pin long edges of necktie together. Stitch along the long edge with a 1/4" seam.

Tie Turn right side out and flatten out so that the seam line is directly in the center of the back of the tie. Press edges well with iron. The raw edge of the triangle will be hidden underneath where the long seam starts. If you want to, you may slip stitch this closed.

Tie
Cut a length of fabric 16" long by 2" wide (figure A). Press in half lengthwise. Open back out and press each edge up to the center fold line. (Similar to making double fold bias) (figure B). Fold in half once more, enclosing the raw edges. Press well and stitch along open edge. (Turn each end to inside and stitch.) (figure C)

Tie Cut a small square of velcro and stitch loopy side to one side of one end and stitch the fuzzy side to the opposite side of the other end. I'm sure "loopy" and "fuzzy" are not the technical names but you know what I mean!! You may want to measure your child's neck at this point. This is a very generous measurement for the neckband, allowing for several year's wear. I overlapped mine a couple of inches and put the velcro at that point. I can easily make it bigger for future years this way.

Tie Fold tie over the neckband to the desired finished length of tie.

Tie Fold knot in half on dotted line (right sides together) (figure A)and stitch around raw edges with a 1/4" seam, leaving the short end open (figure B). Turn right side out and press well.
Tie
Fold around the top of the necktie (refer to picture) and pull the ends up at an angle behind (figure A). The ends that overlap will tuck down into the front of the knot. Slip stitch by hand the top opening closed. I also slip stitch the back where the triangle ends overlap (figure B).

Tie And you're done! Wasn't that easy? And I love that it doesn't take much material either!
